Dr. Donald S. OrkandDr. Donald S. Orkand

Dr. Donald S. Orkand is a highly successful entrepreneur, having founded The Orkand Corporation in 1970 and, in 2004, co-founded DC Ventures and Associates, LLC, which works with senior management to develop and execute successful growth strategies. He has also advised (pro bono) public educational institutions, healthcare systems and foundations.

Under Dr. Orkand's leadership The Orkand Corporation grew from a two-person firm into a thriving $90 million company, employing more than 1,100 staff members. Its continuous growth in the dynamic and challenging world of information technology and government contracting made it a particularly attractive acquisition candidate. The company was acquired in July 2004 by a large, publicly traded corporation.

Dr. Orkand founded The Orkand Corporation to provide information systems and analytical services to a wide range of public- and private-sector clients, and he has been lauded for the company's success. Its clients were a "who's who" in government circles, including the U.S. Departments of Energy, State, Labor, Commerce, Interior, and the United States Postal Service, as well as the National Institutes of Health and many other public and private organizations.

Dr. Orkand has served as chair of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). Before joining UMUC's Board of Visitors, Orkand chaired the University of Maryland Foundation and served on the Dean's Advisory Council of the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland (UM), College Park. In addition, Dr. Orkand serves or has served on a number of business, professional, and academic governing bodies, including the board of Suburban Hospital.

Dr. Orkand earned a BS (graduating summa cum laude), an MBA, and a doctorate, all in statistics and economics, from New York University. He studied under world-renowned quality-enhancement guru W. Edwards Deming, his advisor for both his master's thesis and doctoral dissertation.

Calvin C LaRocheCalvin C LaRoche

Calvin C LaRoche is a proven leader with 35 years of management experience including significant general management responsibilities. Cal co-founded DC Ventures and Associates, LLC, which invests in early stage technology companies. Cal also works with senior management to develop and execute successful growth strategies. As he grew in general management, he developed in depth skills and experience in strategy, planning, sales, marketing, international business, and governance in not for profit organizations.

Until its acquisition by Harris Corporation in July 2004, Cal was Chief Operating Officer at The Orkand Corporation, a marquee federal information technology services provider. Cal joined The Orkand Corporation in May 2000 as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and assumed the COO position in September 2001. He provided oversight for the company's operating units, business development activities and support staffs; a total organization of over 1,100 employees. While Chief Operating Officer, the Orkand Corporation's revenue grew by 20% to $90 million. Most recently, he successfully managed the acquisition process for The Orkand Corporation.

Prior to joining The Orkand Corporation, Cal was a Senior Vice President for SkyTel Communications Inc., a leader in the paging and wireless messaging industry, serving almost 2 million customers worldwide. He joined SkyTel in June 1994, serving as the Chief Executive Officer and President of SkyTel's international operations. He was responsible for the expansion of the company's wireless messaging business outside of the United States. Under Cal's leadership, SkyTel's international operations grew to over 550,000 subscribers and $98 million of revenue with a 95% growth rate.

Next, Cal was given the responsibility to develop a wholesale subsidiary for SkyTel. The U.S. wholesale business clients included over 100 U.S. telecommunication carriers and Internet Service Providers. Through his leadership, this business line grew to over 400,000 subscribers with over $110 million of revenue. Cal was a leader in the acquisition process for SkyTel during its acquisition by WorldCom in 1999.

Prior to joining SkyTel, Cal was a Director of Strategic Development for IBM at the company's headquarters in Armonk, New York. During a 24-year career with IBM, he directed an information systems sales and marketing organization consisting of 1,200 professionals. Cal later had worldwide responsibility for IBM's advertising and promotion. He then became a founding partner in the creation and management of IBM Consulting Group, a multi-country IT and business process re-engineering consulting business. Finally, he led the development of IBM's strategic plans for its services business.

Cal was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD. Cal is currently chairman of the Board of Trustees for Norwood School, an independent K-8 school in Bethesda, MD He holds a Bachelorís of Science degree in Political Science from Central State University in Ohio. He also completed study in IBM's Advanced Business Institute with a concentration in Financial Management.
